Its tingly, plumping formula is packed with light-reflecting emollients that make your lips look fuller with a single glossy swipe, while its feather-proof coverage minimizes the appearance of fine lines for a super smooth finish. Best for Sensitive Skin: Charlotte Tilbury Collagen Lip Bath Gloss

View at Sephora ($35)

What We Love: It's formulated without irritants that could cause the lips to sting.
What We Don't Love: The plumping effect is minimal.

Not to totally shade other lip plumpers, but many contain mild irritants like cinnamon, capsicum, and even bee venom that cause your lips to swell and sting in the process, which may not be ideal for those with sensitive skin. Charlotte Tilbury's Lip Bath Gloss, however, promotes a pain-free payoff with gentle mustard sprout extract. And because hydration is key to achieving that ultra-plush pouty effect, nourishing marine collagen and coconut oil will give your lips some much-needed moisture. It's also formulated with shimmery pearlescent pigments, which reflect light to create an illusion of even larger lips.

What We Love: This set includes a plumper for both day and night use.
What We Don't Love: The tingling sensation may be too strong for some.

This TikTok-famous lip plumper duo delivers needle-free results that even Kylie Jenner herself would approve of. The set includes two lip plumpers: One with ginger essence for daytime use as a volumizing lip gloss and another with mint for nighttime use as a leave-on mask. Both contain vitamin E and collagen for a fuller, more moisturized look and feel, and feature a lightweight, non-sticky formula that delivers hours of comfortable wear. Note: Both plumpers may burn pretty intensely upon application, but the feeling is, of course, far less painful than nip and tuck.

What We Love: You can choose from a metallic, shimmer, or glossy finish and tons of shades.
What We Don't Love: The texture is a bit tacky.

We can't talk about lip plumpers without giving Buxom a shoutout. The volume-focused brand is big on big lips, offering an entire line of plumping products, including a balm, liner, serum, two lipstick formulas, and of course, its best-selling Full-On Plumping Lip Polish that flawlessly fakes a filler-like pout. With a selection of more than 20 pigmented shades in three lustrous finishes, its glamorous glossy effect is certainly one of our favorites. Equally as impressive, the Buxom lip plumper features a peptide-infused formula and a refreshingly tingly feel that provides the potent plumping power you'd expect from the brand, while vitamins A and E offer lasting moisture.

Collagen, sunflower seed oil, shea butter, and hyaluronic acid — a dream team of powerhouse ingredients — plump and nourish lips to put fine lines to bed. Two clear, glossy shades can be applied throughout the day to help achieve perfectly volumized and supple lips without the distraction of tints and glitter. But if you do prefer a surge of color, the brand's shimmery sparking rosé option might make you feel a little more put-together.

What We Love: This versatile treatment hydrates, preps, and plumps the lips.
What We Don't Love: The plumping effect is minimal.

Plumping and hydration go hand-in-hand, so it's no wonder why this volumizing moisture treatment from Clinique works so well. Its gentle, fragrance-free formula is ideal for sensitive skin types and it's rich in lipids, shea butter, and ceramides, which work together to plump, moisturize, and soothe the lips. It can also be used multiple ways: as a balm for an instant boost of hydration, a five-minute treatment to condition lips before applying makeup, or even as an overnight mask to maximize its nourishing benefits. What We Love: You can wear it before bed and wake up to fuller-looking lips.
What We Don't Love: The application can be messy.

This Tatcha lip mask maximizes the results of your lip-plumping gloss by creating a great foundation for the next step in the process. The leave-on treatment doesn't need to be rinsed off or removed after applying and its jelly-like formula absorbs into the skin to fully. It features nourishing ingredients like squalane and Japanese peach that lock in moisture, plump fine lines, and improve fullness. We recommend using this mask before bed so it can work its magic while you sleep, but its lightweight, non-sticky feel is comfortable enough to lacquer on during the day, too.

What to Keep in Mind

When shopping for a lip plumper, it's important to look at the ingredients label as the lips, and the area around them, are very delicate. "Seek out plumpers that utilize hyaluronic acid and collagen, as both ingredients help draw hydration to the top level of the skin to naturally plump and define lips," says Brian Nourian, co-founder of Le Jolie Medi Spa. "Avoid harsh ingredients like peppermint oil and cinnamon, as these ingredients work to boost lip shape by irritating the skin to increase blood flow to the surface. These irritants are doing more harm than good." As with most beauty products, it is also best to avoid harmful chemicals like parabens, sulfates or phthalates.

Plumping Power

Many beauty products make promises they can't keep, but with a good lip plumper and the right formula, you will actually see a noticeable difference in lip fullness. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Amelia K. Hausauer explains that there are two routes to getting a plumped up lip using topical lip plumpers.

First, there are the more gentle humectant and emollient-based products that feature hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid. These create luscious volume without any irritation. "Then there are products that cause vasodiliation (the opening of blood vessels) with gentle swelling from increased circulation," Dr. Hausauer says. "Vasoldilators work differently and can be fine for some but often cause irritation, redness, tingling or even an uncomfortable sensation." She notes that these products usually contain ingredients like bee venom, cinnamon, or pepper extract. Which route you go with will depend on how sensitive your skin is, how much volume you're looking for, and your tolerance to any tingling sensation.

How long your newly plumped lips will last depends on the product. Some products boast 24 hour lasting power and some can be even more long-lasting, resembling the effects of filler, when applied consistently over time. When looking at lasting power, think about the occasion or outings you'll want to wear plumper to and consider your personal preference. Usually, the longer the effect will last the better so you don't have to worry about constantly reapplying.

Your Questions, Answered

What are the benefits of a lip plumper?

If you're new to the world of plumpers but are considering giving one a try, know that there can be many benefits to applying a swipe of these volumizing products every day or every once in a while. "Lip plumpers can add an instant boost of plumping and shine. They're great for red carpet or special events as there is no downtime after using them, and they offer instant results," Nourian says. "If you're thinking about going under the knife, they're also a nice, non-committal way to enhance your natural lip shape and see what your lips look like slightly enhanced if you've never gotten fillers or injections." Some lip plumpers can even offer additional benefits like anti-aging, hydration, color and more.

Are lip plumpers safe?

Lip plumpers that rely on humectants like hyaluronic acid are safe to use every day. Dr. Hausauer notes that these products are made even better when combined with emollients like ceramides and occlusives like squalane or petroleum jelly. "This trifecta is the hallmark of great moisturizers and safe to use on the gentle lip skin as often as necessary," Dr. Hausauer says. She warns that lip plumpers that require vasodilation should be used in moderation as they can be more irritating.

How often should you apply lip plumpers?

The frequency at which you apply lip plumpers will depend on the product and its formula.  "Products that rely on combination moisturizing really are fine to use regularly, since in fact they may actually improve the barrier function of the lips and limit chapped cracked skin," Dr. Hausauer says. "Ones with harsher ingredients I would test before wearing to an important event and watch out for excessive irritation."
